After watching the video about the Dust Bowl, would you have survived the Dust Bowl? Would you have stayed with your farm or would you have gone to California?

This posting is due by the start of your history block on Thursday, November 12.

  1. I don't think I would have been able to survive because of all the dust getting into everyone's lungs. It would be hard to breathe and it would be difficult to get food because all the crops were gone and it would be hard to get out into the storm with the wind gusts and everything. Plus the dust would make it difficult to see and it would just be bad. I would probably have gone to California because there would be no use staying at a farm where you can't even grow crops or make money. It would be better in California where there might be a chance that people could get jobs and earn money. It just makes more sense to leave than to stay and not make money and be miserable.

  2. I think that i would have been able to survive but it would have been very difficult and hard. I think that if i did die it would be because of some disease or starvation i wouldn't just give up like many people did during the dust bowl. I probably would have moved some place els right away during the dust bowl because i wouldnt wait around to starve and get dust pneumnia i would take my family and leave and not be miserable.

  3. I probably would not have survived the Dust Bowl. I would have no way of earning income because crops couldn't grow. I would probably end up dying from all of the dirt that gets into your lungs. I would just be so malnourished because of the lack of food. I would also be exhausted from trying to clean off all of the dust but it would just keep coming back anyways. Even though it would be hard to leave my farm behind I would go to California. In California I might actually have a chance at earning income and progressing at getting back to my full health. In the end, California would be a better choice than staying because there's not point in staying when you know it's not going to get better. Why stay miserable when you can just go start out fresh?

  4. I don't think that I would have survived the dust bowl. It was very hard for people to survive, and pnemonia killed many. I think that I would go to California and leave my farm, because I wouldn't have wanted to risk the health of my family. The way I see it, the people who moved to California couldn't have had it any worse than those who stayed, so why not start something new.

  6. I dont think i would have survived the Dust Bowl because there would be too much disease. Since there was also a lack of food and food growth, it would be very difficult to live because of this. I would move on to California because out of the decisions of staying in the Dust Bowl and going to California, going to California, i think would be the smartest decision. i wouldn't want to put my family's health in jeapordy because of some giant sand storm.

  7. I don't think I could have survived. I don't think I would be able to take all that dust everywhere and going to into your lungs. It'd be too hard for me. I think I wouldn't stay in the Dust Bowl. I'd probably leave in search of something better. Maybe after all this passed, I would return to farming if it was really something I was passionate about. For the most part it would all be trying to survive and get some form of income for food and basic things we need to live. If I couldn't get it in the Dust Bowl, I don't think I'd see a point in sticking around.

  8. i don't think i would have been able to survive the dustbowl because of how traumatizing it would have been. You could barley breath, couldn't see and so many got airborn diseases. I think it would be so scary to be in that time. I would have gone to California because i wouldn't want to put my family in danger for staying there just for my farm.

  10. would have survived the dust bowl as most people did. Indeed, it would have been challenging and life would be miserable because of possible pneumonia, difficulties breathing and seeing, and just the frustration of everything being covered in dust constantly, but I feel that I would have perservered. I would have left and gone to California as many did for the sake of my family. I wouldn't want to put them in danger for a farm and land that is impossible to grow crops on. Being in the dust bowl was a terrible situation so I cannot see why moving to California wasn't appealing to all. The loss of a farm is not as tragic as the loss of a family member...

  11. i think that i woild have survived the dust bowl. it would really suck though because you wouldnt be able to even go outside because of the dust being so bad. I would have tried my hardest to pick up and move my family out to where there was work and food because i wouldnt wasnt to put myself and my family through all of that.

  12. I'm not sure if I would be able to survive the Dust Bowl in the Great Depression. In the little "choose your own adventure" activity I chose to go to California and then to continue traveling (finally striking oil! Yeaaaah!) and I think I would have truly followed that path in the Great Depression just simply because riding the rails seems like dangerous fun to me. That would help me escape the killer dust, but, with the danger it brought (falling off trains, no food or money) and all that jazz, I don't know if I'd be able to survive.

  14. I'm not sure if I would have gone to California or stayed at the farm. I guess it depends how long I owned the farm, but chances are I would move to California after a year or two after the dust bowl hit. I'm pretty sure I would have survived the dust bowl because I would be able to depend on my family to help me through it. If i were to move to California then I'm positive I would survive, but if I stayed at my farm then the only reason I would survive would be because I had my family there so that it wasn't all on me.

  15. I personally think it would be very hard to survive, but I would make it. It would be hard to breathe, and do daily activities. There would be so much dust, and things that could get in your lungs. Just walking around would be so hard. There would be high winds, and dust flying everywhere. I personally think that it would depend on the extremities, and the situation. I would move to California because there was no jobs that you could get here. Most workers we looked at were famers, and it would be so difficult to live. I think that there would be no doubt in my mind to stay. In California you could start a new life, and get a job. It would depend on when I left as well. If I left to California, in the beginning of the Dust Bowl, I would be better off. If I moved at the end, it would be much more difficult. This seems like the best place you could go to get the most out of your situation. There aren't are big reasons that I would stay, where I was. Life in California seemed much better.

  16. I think it's possible that I could have survived the Dust Bowl, because many people did survive, but there were also a lot of people that unexpectedly got sick and died. Life would have been really difficult to stay on the farm, but I probably would have because I wouldn't have wanted to give everything up. Nobody really had very many belongings, so I think it would have been hard to give up your home because it was one of the very few things that you actually had. Also, I probably would have been to scared to go to California because I wouldn't know where I was going or if there was going to be anything there for me, so I most likely would have stayed where I knew how life was going to be, even though it wasn't a great life.

  17. I think that I would have been able to make it through the dust bowl but my life would not be worth much. Going outside would be a chalange and with all the dirt in my lungs it would be hard to do anything physical which is what I love to do. I would most likly not just leave my family behind and head for California. If they told me it was in their best interest then I would consider it. This would be a hard decision though since I would have lived on that farm all my life. It would also be relieving in some sense to leave because there was nothing healthy and good on the farm.

  18. Yes, I would have toughed out the Dust Bowl if I chose to stay, but I would have picked to go to California because then I wouldn't have had to deal with the dust and everything at home and I could probably get a job out there. Also, in the adventure thing we did in class, I went to California and got rich, so yeah.

  19. I think it would have been really tough to survive the dust bowl because of all the disease and shortage of food. Also many people lost all hope of ever surviving and once you lose hope you lose everything. I would probably have gone off to California because it would have been hard to grow crops and just the hope of a good job without dirt would get me going. The farm would go under anyway because you would lose so much money and wouldn't be able to pay for any of your families needs. Overall the Dust Bowl put alot of people in a life or death situation.

  20. i would have probably freaked out a lot and sorta survived it if I didn't lose my mind first. It would have been very hard and I think I would have stayed with my farm. I would stay because it was the place where I was raised and I have lived there my whole life, so why would I leave now? The bunny problem I wouldn't mind but the bugs...ewwie! I would have a very hard time with the bugs, thats just gross. Also dealing with all the dust and dirt getting into my lungs would really bother me because I like feeling clean and not covered in dirt and sweat. I would have survived but it would be a good challenge for me, I would just have to keep thinking postive and hope for the rain to return.

  21. I'm pretty sure i would have survived it because i would have fled to California. I would have simply hopped into my car when i saw the dust clouds coming and drove off!! That would have been WAY too scary for me to watch! I would have taken my family and neighbors with me to California too, of course. We all would enjoy the nice hot weather instead of dust filled lungs!

  22. I think that I would have been able to live during the Dust Bowl, I doubt that I would have lived well. With all the sickness that was going around it would be nearly impossible for anyone to live well in those conditions. I think I would have moved anywhere where the Dust Bowl was not impacting the people that were living there. It would be hard to leave I think, if it was the only place I had ever known but sometimes you just have to start new and do what is best and in this case, moving out of Dust Bowl is what I think would be best.

  23. I think that I would have survived during the dust bowl because I definitely would have went to California. I would want to be as far away from the dust as possible. It would be very hard to survive if I stayed at the farm. Having dust in your house and breathing it in all the time sounds horrible! Even though I would have to sell my farm it would be better for my family to go and live in a new place where they didn't have to worry about getting sick from the dust.

  26. i would have survived the dust bowl because i would have moved to California and found a different job there because it was the better way of life to go there and to get a job while i could instead of waiting for the rain to come back. also i probably would have moved to California our of fear after the first dust storm.

  30. I dont think i could of survived the dust bowl. Many people died of pnemonia, and other health reasons. Food was very hard to find, and life was really hard on the farms during this time. I think i would of convinced my family to go to California. I would of done this because its a new start, and new oppertunites. Even though it would of been hard to leave, I think my family and i would of left our farm.

  31. I believe that with my incredible survival skills and tacticts that personally i would have stayed on my farmland and have been able to hold out. Indeed, it would have been incredibly challenging with the high winds blowing the fine but heavy dust around and almost no way to make an income and provide for a family. I believe that when things are bad one of the most important things you can do is never give up so i would have tried my best to pull through the pain and suffering of the dust bowl

  32. I do believe i would have been able to survive the dust bowl, but not because of my survival skills or anything, but because i have common sense. when somethings not working (like farming where you were) then i fix it, and if that means moving somewhere else, then so be it. I would have gone to california most likely and try to start a new life there, i wouldnt give up till I found something i at least liked a little, anything to get food on the table. I would make logical decisions, not favored ones. Also, i would never give up, because sometimes you just got to say to yourself, when it rains..it pours.

  35. I don't think I would've survived. The storms were much too strong and I don't think I would've been strong enough to handle that. If I had the choice, I would've packed up my belongings and moved to California or some other place to get away from the dust bowl because I hate dust. I would've tried to find some sort of job, and I would try to make a better life.

  38. If i would've stayed at my farm i probably would not have survived because by the explanation in the videos, life was very uncomfortable, dangerous, and depressing. If i lived during that time i would've moved to California because at least there you have a source of income and food and are away from a daily threat to your life.

  39. I would have stayed with my farm to hold my memories i had with it. As it sounded from the video i probably would not of lived but i would've put up a fight.

  40. I think that it would have depended on my age and availability to supplies. If my family had a surplus of food it would be much easier, but if someone in the family was sick then disease could spread quickly. If it were up to me, I'd move to California once things weren't looking so great at my home. It would probably be better than anything where I had origonally been living

  42. Me and my family would've definetly moved to California and ditched the farm we had if we had to. My little brother is scared of bugs and there was a million of them flying around and dust in your lungs is really gross so my family wouldn't want to stick around. I doubt we'd be really passionate about farming anyway, so we'd probably just stay in California and get jobs, hopefully we'd survive the Dust Bowl!

  43. I don’t think that I would have survived the dust bowl during the great depression. I would’ve gotten sick, as well as tired of cleaning out the dirt and having to eat gritty food. During the dust bowl there was a patch of grasshoppers that would pass through and eat everything in sight. I am severely afraid of bug and would have freaked out, and on top of that they would eat all your food. Most of the people were poor and were starving. They suffered from malnutrition and I know for a fact that I can’t go a day without eating something! Also there were jack rabbits that swept through and people would kill them to save their crops. I would have been terrified to see or hear an innocent animal being killed.
If I had the choice to go to California or stay on the farm I would have probably stayed on the farm because after having dust in your lungs it was hard to breathe and this was no condition to be traveling in. Also I would have hoped for something to help save the farm. Most people grew up on the farms and if they had to leave, that would be like leaving their only home and childhood behind.

  44. I do not think I would have been able to survive the Dust Bowl. I do not think I would have been able to stay in my house when there was constantly dirt in it. The storms of dust caused dust to get into people’s lungs. If I continued to get dirt in my lungs and throat I would not have been able to stand it. I think I would have moved my family to California to have a better life.

  45. I think I would have been able to survive, but it wouldn't have been easy. I would have stayed with my family on our farm because I didn't know when the next storm was going to come or if we would get rain. I would have had a very hard time providing for my family but I think we could have made it work by rationing what we ate and trying to stay as dust-free as possible. If I somehow knew that the Dust Bowl would last for a decade I would have for sure moved to California, but unfortunately I don't have psychic powers.

  46. I think that i would have probably died. I would have stayed on my farm and not been able to make anymoney. Then since i would be broke i would decide to move to the city to get money, but i would not be able to get a job because every job was alreay full. I would then have no money and no place to live and die. poor me.

    ReplyDelete
  47. I doubt i would have lived during the dust bowl. I am not one to cooperate with dust, so living in constant dust would've been the worst! I think I would've stayed on my farm because if my family had the jobs we have now, chances are they would be lost, thus we wouldn't be able to afford to move. :/

    ReplyDelete
  48. I' pretty sure I would have lived. I wouldn't have liked it at all, being all dirty and gritty ALL THE TIME, but I would have been stubborn and stayed on my farm, trying to make it work. I would not like to just pick up my whole life and move, and I would think that things would be gtetting better soon, which they did not.
