I think all of them were important in their own way for American citizens. I think most important was protecting the public health through acts such as the Pure Food and Drug Act and Meat Inspection Act. This made it so people knew what was going into their food. Muckrakers like Upton Sinclair exposed what was really going into the food we eat. I really think it's important because obviously it's still around today and can you imagine the bad health of people today if they were still putting so much chemicals into our food? I think the citizens of America deserve to have better health otherwise what kind of country would we be? We need to be healthy to function. That's why these acts were so important for the Federal government to have passed. I think that's most important, but I also thought it was important for the states and cities to get power.

I think the most important act that was passed during the progressive movement was the act spurred by Upton Sinclair's novel "The Jungle". This was the Safe food and Drug act. I think this was important because it not only protected people then but it continues to protect us from becoming sick from the food we trust to keep us healthy. This also was important because at the time diseases and illnesses from food and water were much harder to treat and left many dead. And paved the roadway for more reforms regarding public health in the early 1900's

The one piece I think was most important is the child labor law. To me this is important because we should not have 5 years olds pretending to be 16 and working jobs that are unsafe for grown adults! The children would be killed from all of the chemicals surrounding them, and also they would be in a dangerous environment while they worked. If we wouldn't have made this law who knows what would have been happening right now.
ReplyDeleteI think the most important program was the Social Welfare Program. The reason I picked this one was because it was the only one that actually worked. It helped ensure a minimum living standard that improved the lifes of many. Also it provided public baths, parks, and a work-relief program. Mother Jones opened playgrounds, free kindergartens, and lodging houses for the homeless. They looked out for the poor and the childern living in the tenements. They believed all people would become good citizens if social conditions were good, and i agree with that statement. This program did really good in the communities and I think it saved many people, that's why i choose the Social Welfare Program.

I definetly think out of all the awesome laws that made our lives better, the one that affects everyone equally, and definetly makes us feel more comfortable, is the Pure Food and Drug Act and Meat Inspection Act. After reading The Jungle, I seriously can't imagine what life would be like not even knowing what's in your food especially considering the things we now know were in it, gross! That act also keeps us healthy and we are way less likely to obtain diseases from eating bad meat or other foods, and drugs likewise. Everyone eats in America after all, so personally I think it's best if we can trust our food to be what it says it is on the package!
ReplyDeleteoh I'm Amanda Swoger, hah forgot there was two amanda's, and block 3bc!
ReplyDeleteI think that the most important law was the Pure Food and Drug Act because if it wasn't for that law, the people would be eating rats and whatever else was swept up from the floor. People could have gotten really sick if it wasn't for this law. This law continues to protect us from eating things that could make us sick today. As we all read in the Jungle, back then everything was just thrown in with the meat and the people would eat it without knowing it. I can't imagine being those people and finding out that they had eaten something extrememly disgusting.
ReplyDeleteSteph Vertin Block 4
i think the most important law was the pure food act because it affected everyone and now the poor immigrants who had been taken advantage of one time before can finally know the horrible truth about the "meat" they were eating
ReplyDeleteDakota Hermes block 4
After reading The Jungle by Upton Sinclair, i would have to say that the Pure Food and Drug Act in 1906, because it let people know what they were actually eating and protected them from getting sick off the food.

I think that the social welfare act and the pure food and drug act are both equally important because without one another they don't help people. The sicial welfare gave people a place to go and helped children have less problems whlie the pure f and d act kept people from getting sick. But with just the pure f and d act the children could still get sick from not having caregivers and some people couldn't even afford food. With the welfare act it gave people the neccisary elements they needed.
ReplyDeleteI think the most important piece of legislation was the Pure Food act because it made sure that what the company's put in their food was not dangerous to the consumers. This law is still important today in making sure that nothing that can poison us can get into our food.

I think the most important one was the pure food and drug act. It was important because it protected innocent people. Most people didn't know what was actually going into the foods they ate but through this act they soon learned. It continues to help the people of this century today. It also keeps us safe and healthy so we can focus on more important things in life.

I think the two most important law was the Pure Food and Drug Act and the Social Welfare Program. I feel like these are the most important because after reading the Jungle, I really got to have a feel for how disgusting the meat was in these days. I don't know how anyone would be able to eat that and how I'm sure diseases skyrocketed because of the unsanitary meat they were consuming. Also the Social Welfare Program because it helped out the poor in the community, saving lives for children and families who stayed on the streets with no where to go.
ReplyDeleteGabrielle 3bc
I would have to say that the pure food and drug act was the most important of all the new legistlature passed durring the progressive era. This at least ensured that people knew what they would be eating, and also helped take most if not all of the very nasty things like rotten or diseased meat out of the foods.
ReplyDeleteI think the most important of all of these is the Pure Food and Drug Act because it changed the way that everyone ate food and thought about what they were consuming. I think it definetly changed America the most and for the best way possible. If this act wasn't in effect right now, who knows what we would all be eating and how many of us would be getting sick and dying. I also think another important one was the Labor Movements because it had alot of good points to increase the safety of working conditions. It also began child labor laws which was very good once they actually started to inforce them.
ReplyDeleteCassi Reissmann 3bc
I think all of them were really important, because america at this time had a lot of problems. These acts helped the people of america for the most part. The one that i think was the most important would be the Protecting Public health which was, pure food & drug act & meat inspections. This was the most important to me because americans didnt really know what they were putting into there bodies and how the food they were consuming would effect their health. Even though i dont enjoy The Jungle, i am really glad Upton Sinclair wrote the book. He showed america what was going on in the meat industeries, and what they were really eating. If this act never happened there would be a lot of sick people and we would be really unhealthy.

ReplyDeleteI'm going to go out on a limb and say that the 16th amendment was the most important piece of progressive legislation. The government would not have been able to fund other programs like welfare services since the government had previously only been getting money from tariffs. Also, the income tax that got more revenue from people with higher incomes curbed the seperation between the wealthy upper class and the poor.
ReplyDeleteEthan K.

oops...that would be sepAration not seperation.
ReplyDeleteI think all of them were very important to the American citizens becuase they all helped in different ways. But i think the most important one was for protecting health care. They made the Pure Food and Drug Act and the Meat Inspection Act. I think this act hepled greatly because it helped citizens know what was being put into their food (especially their meats). It also made the workers making the food have special sanitary conditions which made the food heathlier.

I think that the most important piece of progressive legislation was the social welfare act because after starting to read the Jungle and learning all the troubles and hardhsips Jurgis and his family because of the fact they were poor. and knowing with the social welfare act many of these hardships would have been lessensed if not eliminated all together. Welfare is also still intact today which means that it was a good idea and it has obvousily worked very well throughout the course of history.
ReplyDeleteOut of the many influential pieces of progressive legislation, I will have to say that the 16th Amendment is one thing that really helped America reach where it is today. Without income tax, the government basically only got money off of taxes on important goods. This clearly would not be enough money to fund nationwide programs at the time or any time in the country's history. The welfare program, which happened during the Progressive Era, would likely not have been possible. Also, it only 'takes' vast amounts of money from those with high paying jobs, and the tax is less as income is less. And obviously, there is no tax on those without any source of income. So, the poor don't 'get poorer'. AS much as we all hate income tax, it is important for the government to be able to fund its programs.

I believe that the most important part was the railroads and disabling the monopolies. This helped in establishing a rise to the middle class population because prices became normal.
ReplyDeleteI think the Pure food and drug act was the most important, because the food of that day and age was not that great even when it was clean. With the pure food and drug act the products were at least somewhat healthier.

ReplyDeleteI would have to say that the pure food and drug act was the best. Without this companies could get away with selling poisoned meat to people who had no idea what they were buying. Now we can eat stuff and not have to worry that there might be pieces of people or dead rats in it. that is a comforting thought. i would hate to have to be a vegetarian because i wont eat garbage.
ReplyDeleteJake Gundrum Block 4
I'm def gonna go with the Pure food and drug act because after reading the jungle my mind is pretty much poluted with all of the horrible things that are in meat and food and i really feel completely sickend by all of that. I'm so glad that that act was made because i dont even have to think about what i'm digisting
ReplyDeleteashley vandenbosch block 3bc:)
the pure food and drugs act. after listening to lugies, bodies, and garabage throwing into the food. the food industries were basicly killing ppl, so they really needed this act or we would be taking a gamble everytime we ate.

I think the most important piece of Progressive Legislation would be Voter Reform because although many of the other pieces of Progressive Legislation are important, Voter Reform allows the citizens the right to help make decisions for the country. If the voters didn't have any say in the decisions made, other reforms wouldn't have happened, such as increased role of government in business regulation and social welfare.

ReplyDeleteIn my opinion it would have to be the pure food and drug act. After reading The Jungle and learning about everything that went into the meat like..a rat, I am thankful that things arent like that today and I know I can eat generally healthy meat. If this wasn't passed, who knows what we would eat.
ReplyDeletei think that the most piece of proggressive legislation was the passing of the pure food and drug act. i feel like this was the most important because after reading "The Jungle" i realize how disgusting and unhealthy the food was. by having to label what was in the meat and other foods the public were informed of what they were buying and knew how healthy or unhealthy it was.
ReplyDelete"I think the most important piece of progressive legislation is the voting reform. A lot of the problems they faced were caused by the fact that they didn't have suitable people running for office. The elected officials would do almost anything for a quick buck and were elected by unfair means. It is important that we have educated officials who know how to deal with problems and in what ways."

I think the most important peice of legislation for the american citizens was the pure food and drug act. After reading The Jungle, and knowing what went into their food and how it was made, and how terrible everything was, I think that pure food was good for american citizens. The act would mean food that was better for them, would fill them up, and would not give them dangerous or deathly diseases. That is why i think that peice of legislation was most important.
ReplyDeleteMollie Turchan Block 4
After reading The Jungle, the most important ones were the Pure Food and Drug Act, and the social welfare programs.
ReplyDeleteBoth of them benefited the citizens. The Pure Food and Drug act required labeling food and checking meat before it was shipped. This prevented the meat industry from putting garbage into their meat, preventing people from getting mad. The social welfare program helped out the poor, and got them back on their feet. If Jurgis and his family would have had that they wouldn't be in the situation they are currently in.

I do believe that all of the reforms with were important, they all played a part in the big picture of a better America. I think that the most important was the Child Labor Laws. I think that it is horrible that some five year olds would be doing jobs that weren't even fit for adults to do. In reality, these kids are getting over worked at a young age which might lead to problems when they are older. Some might be disabled from an accident at work or even killed. If America is sending out a sixteen years and younger work force, and all of the generation is dying because of work or only living a short amount of time then really there is no one left to become great leaders, parents or anything of the sort.

I think the most important reform was the Social welfare Program because it ensured the basic stnadard of living for all citizens. In my opinion, it helped a lot of people with things like unemployment benefits, accident and health insurance, and a social security system for the disabled/elderly; this is why I chose it to be the best.

Personally I would say that the most important piece of progressive legislation was the pure drug and food act during this time. I believe this is true because it affected everyone, not just children, or just immigrants, everyone ate at least a little meat, and to know that all that crap was thrown in there is just disgusting and unhealthy. who knows what we'd be eating today if it wasnt for this piece.
ReplyDeleteBubba Davis 3bc
I think that the prtecting child labor laws and public heath were the most important. Without those two laws, nobody would be able to go to work and earn a living because they would all be so sick. Child labor laws are very important in my opinion also because i think that children should be able to be children. They shouldn't have to be put to work at meat packing industries when they are 5 years old, that's insane! In conclusion, the laws that protect the citizen's well-being are the most important to me.
ReplyDeleteI think the most important piece was more power to the voters because it opened up many different things that voters could when before they had hardly any power. I think the specifically initiative was important because citizens could propose new laws that would be helpful to the people. This was important because the people's voices could be heard.
ReplyDeleteKathryn Demerath block 4
I think that the most important one was the child labor law. This is the most important because kids should not have to lie about their age just to be able to work. insted of working the kids should be going to school and enjoying their childhood.
ReplyDeleteI think the most important would have to be the Pure Food and Drug Act. I feel this way because after reading parts of the "Jungle," i was disgusted, so I am glad this law was past. Even though the book isn't the best book ever, I am glad Upton Sinclair wrote it. He changed our society in a good way. The Pure Food and Drug act now helped keep America healthier.

I think the most important piece of progressive legislation was the Pure Food and Drug Act. The reason i think this is because, obviously, food affects everyone. If America's people arent healthy, then who knows how the country would be. This is the first time I've thought of it this way, but America wouldn't work if everyone living here was sick because of the food it provided its people with. Food is obvioulsly a big part of a human being's life.

BTW, im sorry i couldn't post this yesterday. I was very sick and went to bed right after football practice. Today im still sick which is why i didn't come to school.
Out of all of the Acts that we discussed, I think that the Food and Drug act was the most important because after reading the jungle and learning about all of the horrors of the meat and food industry, that act has helped to change how we eat. Personally, I think that it would help the most because i wouldn't want to be eating the stuff that they did and I'm pretty sure that everyone would get sick easier because the meat was contaminated.
ReplyDeleteI belive that the food and drug regulation one is the most imporant because it helps regulate the meat packing industries. I feel that it was necessary for the government to step in and help stop the meat packing idustries and stop them from making more people sick.
ReplyDelete-Andy Veitenhans
I think that the most important piece of progressive legislation was the pure food and drug act. I think this because the meat packing industry was risking the public's health. There was a lot more than meat in most of the "meat" that was sold. I think this act protected all americans. Hannah Pitz
ReplyDeleteI think the most immport law was the Pure Food and Drug Act because Upton Sinclair wrote "The Jumgle" and helped this law out. It helped so the food people ate was sanitary and was creating many people to become. This saved many lives in which could have been lost.
ReplyDeletei think that the food and drug act was definately the most important because if helped regulate what went into the meat that was being packed and canned. It helped keep some of the nasty disgusting things that were getting into the canned meat from getting in and making people sick as well as killing some
ReplyDeletei think the most important would def. be the pure food and drug act because that way there were rules about what could and couldn't go into food which prevented a lot of diseases from being spred which, in effect, led to a decrease in death. also with the law about having to lable what all the ingredients are people with allergies would more likly be able to avoid the stuff that would make them sick also cause less death.
ReplyDeleteerika w. block 4
ReplyDeleteI think the child labor law was very benificial. It is important because children should not be held acountable for a job when they are still so young! The conditions they were placed in for their jobs were so harsh that they were putting their health at risk. Kids should have time to enjoy life and to recieve a good education! :]
I think the most important is the drug act and also the pure food act because it would prevent diseases which therefore prevented death and also the drug act also stopped death and crime
